You’re Invited to Fresh Friday
You’re cordially invited to Fresh Friday, a new day that is going to happen every week at your office.
Fresh Friday is a special day in which you:
- Reorganize or toss away stacks of paper sitting on the desk.
- Clear away old coffee mugs, plates or food wrappers.
- Dust off the crumbs around the keyboard.
- Dust off the crumbs stuck in the keyboard.
- Grab a cleaning product (your choice) to help kill the germs, coffee cup rings and whatever else has built up on your desk that week.
“Environmental microbiologist Dr. Charles Gerba from the University of Arizona, recently shared his tips on keeping your office clean and hygienic in the following video [taken from here]. We learn that the desktop is one of the germiest places in the office and that 20-30% of women’s handbags have fecal bacteria underneath.”

Watch this video the whole way through and be sure to catch the closing words, you won’t be sorry.
Okay, are you ready to bring Fresh Friday to your office or what?
Changing your employee’s cleaning habits isn’t easy and is sometimes impossible. You could give them facts that all the diarrhea germs in the world are on their desk, and they may not take the time to clean. And, they’ll probably still eat their sandwich on their desk.
Here are some ideas on how you might incorporate Fresh Friday into your office:
Learning by example ain’t no joke. Take the time to clean your own desk every Friday, bump some fresh tunes and make it fun. Others on your team may follow your lead.
Make cleaning the desk every Friday into a points based system. Clean your desk, here’s a point. When you reach a certain amount of points, you can redeem them for a gift.
If no one is buying into the game, make it a requirement to clean your desk every Friday. Have the management check into this. Sounds harsh, but if it means for a healthier office, it might be worth it.
BONUS: Here’s a jam for you to play every time you clean off that desk. Bump it up, friends. Bump it UP!
Now, I’d love to hear if you already incorporate Fresh Friday or Wipey Wednesday (that one is for you, Jeremy) or if you plan to incorporate it in your office. And, how do you do it?
Cheers to clean desks!
